Results were even more impressive after the full month of the trial; the green tea users had three times the weight loss of the women who were simply dieting.12
The caffeine content of green tea is part of the reason that green tea promotes weight loss. Caffeine increases the body's basal metabolic rate (the rate at which energy is used for the basic functions of breathing, pumping blood, and mamtaining body temperature). This increase is referred to as a thermogenic effect; it may boost weight loss by helping the body burn more calories during day-today life. |

The latest weight-loss wonder, over-the-counter (OTC) orlistat (Alii), promises that "if you could lose 10 pounds through dieting, you could lose 15 pounds with hard work and Alii." Orlistat is also available by prescription as the brand-name product Xenical. Since the drug's actions rely on binding 25 percent of the fats you consume in your gut and passing them through your body unabsorbed, there's no focus on the real reason that most people get fat: too much refined carbohydrate. No wonder the drugs don't have much effect. |

The basic equation of dieting is that any extra calories you consume are stored in your body as fat. To lose weight you need to burn more calories than you take in, either by reducing your caloric intake or by burning extra calories with physical activity. The SuperFoodsRx Diet includes strategies to achieve both these goals.
The challenge for today's dieter is to reduce calorie intake while at the same time boosting nutrient density. |

| Most people don't realize the effect that chronic dieting has on their ability to make decisions. Most fad diets—or diets that are low in essential nutrients—make it nearly impossible for you to succeed in losing weight. That's because when you do not have a sustained and gradual release of blood glucose—which ideally comes from whole, nutrient dense, fiber-rich foods—your moods are affected such that you are extremely vulnerable to fuzzy thinking, mood swings, and impulsive behavior. Foods that are high in sugars and refined carbs and low in fiber lead to a rapid and extreme rise in glucose. |

What's the hardest thing about dieting? Most of us would agree: It's standing in front of the fridge or pantry at 10:00 p.m., starving, and giving in to a handful of cookies or a bowl of ice cream or a bag of chips. It's almost an out-of-body experience. You don't want to do it but you feel compelled to. Why? Because you're hungry. Or you think you're hungry. But it's really more than that. You may in fact be stressed or tired. One thing for sure: You're not feeling in control. The surprising fact is that you may be subverted by the very diet you're following. |

The group that had used aspartame during the dieting phase continued to use it during the follow-up phase and showed less rapid relapse than the group that did not use aspartame. Unfortunately, linear regression analysis of the weight loss at 77 weeks indicated that the sustained weight loss was unrelated to aspartame use. Most probably, the subjects' measures of aspartame use were too inaccurate to allow such a relationship to be observed. Nevertheless, at present no clear demonstration exists in the literature that sustained use of low-calorie sweeteners produces a significant weight loss. |

The book offers a cognitive approach to dieting. "I counsel people to learn a different cognitive or behavioral skill each day for two weeks before they even start a diet," she told me. "The big publishers all wanted immediate solutions, and they all wanted me to include a specific diet in the book. That's not what it's about. I'm interested in the long-term approach of changing our thoughts and beliefs toward food. The behaviors, and the specific diet, all that comes later." The week that I interviewed her, she appeared on Good Morning America. |

An empty stomach and crash dieting can also result in problems with bad breath due to ketones produced in the fasting state. These are produced when the body is no longer supplied with energy-giving carbohydrates and it begins to break down its fat stores. Bad breath can also be an indication of some more serious health conditions such as diabetes, where the breath smells like acetone (i.e., nail polish remover), and liver or kidney failure, where the breath smells like fish or ammonia. |

Abusing the body's digestive system through frequent strict dieting may be the main cause of this problem.
Because artificial sweeteners are low-energy foods and non-physiological, the body deals with them in the same way as described above. It recognizes their complete absence of potential energy and signals "low energy." As a result, it stimulates the desire for more food. This principle is a well-known and commonly applied practice, both in the food industry and in animal feeding. |

First of all, despite the naysayers, low-carb dieting in some form or another is here to stay, according to Opinion Dynamics, a market research firm that has tracked the movement since 2003.
"We expect it to stabilize at between 7 to 15 percent of the population [or about 15 million to 33 million people]," says Larry Shiman, vice president of the Cambridge, Massachusetts-based, full-service market research company, which specializes in the food industry. "The legacy of the trend is that for many dieters, low carb still plays a substantial role. |
| For years, people with diabetes also have been using the GI to plan meals and snacks that generate the smallest possible increases in blood sugar, and more recently, the GI has been touted by experts as a valuable dieting tool as well.
Nowadays, a number of nutritionists and experts recommend that their carb-cutting clients watch out for white bread, white rice, and other sweets or starchy foods because "they rank high on the glycemic index." What this means is that they trigger a dramatic rise in blood sugar levels. |
| Low Carb" Is a Misleading Term
At the end of the day, advocates of low-carb dieting and maintaining insist that the term "low carb" is inappropriate and misleading.
"Low carb doesn't mean you're mainlining lard and eating pork rinds all day. It means making healthier choices in carbs and picking better-quality foods," says Lora Ruffner, R.N., who founded the popular www.lowcarb luxury.com website in 1999 and Low Carb Luxury Magazine in 2000. |
| Artificial sweeteners are simply not the answer to dieting. Nor are they effective ways to deal with hypoglycemia, diabetes, or insulin resistance.
"Fake sweeteners like sucralose and aspartame are made of unhealthy chemicals with toxic by-products. For example, sucralose (Splenda) contains man-made, chemically produced chlorine, which is carcinogenic, and aspartame (Equal or NutraSweet) converts to formaldehyde, an embalming fluid used to preserve the dead," explains Dr. |

It is the underlying assumption behind calorie counting, nutritional computer printouts, and fad dieting.
The focus on gathering nutritional capital is based on the inaccurate belief that nutrition is additive - that is, to be safe, extras of everything should be taken. This is not to say that, at the beginning of a health program, a person may not need extra nutrients to replenish deficiencies and to rebalance metabolism, but after a few months, as the person's health improves, he or she needs fewer nutrients to sustain good health. |

Using water as a weight-reduction strategy is often found to be more stable and permanent than other kinds of calorie reduction and dieting techniques.14 When we drink a glass of water before and during each meal, along with two glasses of water two hours after each meal, we are filled up and are hence encouraged to eat only when food is actually needed by the body.

Even if these children don't intend to become anorexic or bulimic, it is highly likely that what starts out as "normal" dieting will disrupt the body's metabolism and chemistry and eventually lead to a serious disorder. Family dynamics also play a role: many sufferers come from families that place great pressure on their children to succeed. |

| You stay on this phase until you reach your desired weight or until you want a break from dieting.
In phase three you have attained your goal weight and can basically be rid of the "diet." The author—astonishingly—recommends that you go back to a "normal" intake of 2,500 to 3,000 calories a day (!) and suggests that you can stop counting both calories and carbohydrates (more on this in Jonny's Lowdown). The "built-in" safeguard against gaining more weight is much like my 4-pound rule (see page 294 in chapter 8). |
| Heavin explains that dieting eventually lowers metabolic rate and causes the opposite of the desired effect—by lowering your metabolism you actually activate survival mechanisms, like your body's ability to run on fewer calories, that cause you to hold onto fat. He calls these mechanisms "starvation hormones" (more on that in Jonny's Lowdown). The Curves program promises to correct damaged metabolism, turning your body from a "food-burning machine" into a "champion fat-burning machine," and fixing your "slow metabolism" in the process. Sounds deliriously appealing. |
